Why Drains Keep Clogging: When to Get Help
A recurring clog deserves assessment. Several slow or backing-up fixtures may involve a shared drain or sewer problem, but the pattern alone does not establish the cause.
Before using a plunger or drain tool
If chemical drain cleaner has been used, or you are unsure, do not plunge, snake, or add another cleaner. Product can remain in a blocked drain and splash during tool use. Follow the actual product label and tell the responding professional what was used. Never mix cleaners. A product's suitability depends on its label and the installation; there is no single rule that every product damages every PVC pipe.

| Observation | Useful detail |
|---|---|
| Recurrence | When it started and what has been tried |
| Fixtures | Which drains are slow or backing up |
| Sounds | Where and when gurgling occurs |
| Products | Cleaner names and when they were used |
Possible causes
Hair, soap buildup, grease, and material flushed down a toilet can contribute to blockages. A single affected fixture does not prove that the obstruction is within easy reach. Avoid forcing tools into the drain.
Older sewer pipes can develop gaps at their joints. Roots may enter these openings and restrict the line, especially in older clay pipes with joints that are no longer watertight. A camera inspection can help identify whether roots, damaged pipe, or another blockage is causing the recurring problem.
Clearing and inspection
A plumber can decide which clearing or inspection method is appropriate. A camera may help identify visible roots, pipe damage, or an obstruction, but access and water or debris can limit the view. Some clearing may be needed before useful footage is possible. No fixed number of clogs or camera-first rule applies to every job.
Reduce preventable buildup
- Use a suitable hair catcher and clean it regularly.
- Let cooking grease cool and put it in the trash, not the drain.
- Keep wipes and other unsuitable material out of toilets.
- Tell the plumber about previous root or pipe problems. Clearing does not repair damaged pipe or guarantee how long the line will stay clear.
