Tank vs. Tankless Water Heaters: What to Compare
Start with your household's hot-water needs and the equipment that can meet them. A qualified installer can compare suitable options after inspecting the home.
The main differences
Scroll the table sideways to see all columns. Keyboard: focus the table and use the arrow keys.
| Compare | Storage tank | Tankless |
|---|---|---|
| Hot water | Stored supply plus recovery | Flow and temperature-rise limits |
| Energy | Maintains stored water temperature | Heats water on demand |
| Installation | Check the selected model and site | Check the selected model and site |
| Maintenance | Follow the model's instructions | Follow the model's instructions |
Size the equipment for the demand
A tank's rated volume is not an exact allowance of usable shower water; recovery and incoming-water temperature also matter. Tankless capacity depends on simultaneous flow and the required temperature rise. Running several fixtures together can exceed it.
Check the installation before comparing prices
A gas tankless installation needs adequate gas supply and the venting, clearances, and other provisions required by that model. Upgrades may be necessary; a larger gas line or different vent is not a universal requirement. Electric models have different requirements. Ask the installer to include all needed work in the written estimate.
Include maintenance and water conditions
Water quality, use, and maintenance affect service life. Follow the manufacturer's schedule for the specific model and water conditions, including descaling when required. Do not assume one annual interval or a promised lifespan applies to every installation.
Compare the complete cost
Compare installed prices, expected energy use, local energy rates, maintenance, and applicable warranty terms. Storage heaters have standby heat loss; their heating elements or burners do not necessarily run continuously. Savings and payback depend on the actual options and use. Ask for the assumptions behind any estimate rather than a guaranteed return.
